OREM — It's been a century since Robert Baden Powell assembled 21 boys into the first patrols at the world's first experimental Boy Scout camp at Brownsea Island, England.
On Aug. 1, Boy Scout troops around the world will celebrate the 100th anniversary of Scouting. Since that date in 1907, Boy Scouts has become a major movement.
All Boy Scouts of America units are encouraged to observe the anniversary by holding commemorative ceremonies at Scout camps and other locations at precisely 8 a.m. on Aug. 1.
"At this time, millions of boys and adults across America will lift three fingers skyward and recite the Scout Oath in celebration of Scouting's Sunrise. The official birthday bash takes place at the 21st World Scout Jamboree in the United Kingdom, but current and former Scouts can join sunrise celebrations in their own communities," Utah National Parks Council spokesman John Gailey said.
The Utah National Parks Council will hold its Assembly Ceremony at the Orem Council offices, 748 N. 1340 West. The public is invited. Following is the agenda:
7:45 a.m. — Assemble troops at the ceremony site
8 a.m. — Sound the horn; flag ceremony
8:05 a.m. —Tell the story of the Brownsea Island adventure
8:20 a.m. — Lead Scouts in a recommitment to Scouting
8:25 a.m. Close with Scout Oath
