In Season 9 of “Seinfeld,” a sugar-craving Elaine Benes stumbles into her boss Mr. Peterman’s office and discovers a piece of cake in his mini-refrigerator.
After one delicious bite, she learns from Peterman that this is no ordinary slice of cake: It’s from the wedding of King Edward VIII to Wallis Simpson, and Peterman acquired it for the lofty price of $29,000.
Not wanting to be found out, Elaine returns to Peterman’s office with the hopes of evening out the cake. Instead, she gets a bit carried away and ends up devouring the entire slice.
And to her dismay, the whole thing was caught on Peterman’s surveillance camera.
“Do you know what happens to a butter-based frosting after six decades in a poorly ventilated basement?” Peterman asks Elaine. “Well, I have a feeling what you are about to go through is punishment enough.”
More than 20 years after that “Seinfeld” episode, a real-life scenario just like it has unfolded.
A slice from Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s wedding cake has just sold for $2,562, and the auction house has offered up the following admonition to the buyer: “It appears to be in exactly the same good condition as when originally sold, but we advise against eating it,” CNBC reported.
The slice of cake, which was one of 23 cakes from the royal wedding in 1981, was initially expected to sell anywhere from $415 to $690, according to CNBC. It features a royal coat of arms in gold, red, blue and silver, and white decorative icing, CNN reported.
“We were amazed at the numbers of people wanting to bid on this large and unique piece of royal cake icing,” auctioneer Chris Albury told CNBC, adding that most inquiries and bids came from the U.K., the U.S. and the Middle East.
A car that Prince Charles gave Princess Diana as an engagement present also recently sold for $72,000, CNN reported.
The wedding cake is the latest example of the public’s fascination with Princess Diana. Currently, a movie about Princess Diana, starring Kristen Stewart, is in the works, the Deseret News reported. The latest season of the hit Netflix series “The Crown” chronicled the first decade of Princess Diana’s relationship to Prince Charles, and the new musical “Diana” will debut both on Netflix and Broadway this year, the Deseret News reported.
